Aciphex (Rabeprazole) is used to decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Rabeprazole is prescribed to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as zollinger-ellison syndrome. Aciphex (rabeprazole) can also be used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to esophagus caused by stomach acid). The medicine may also be given with an antibiotic to prevent gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori.

This medication should be taken exactly as it was prescribed. The patient should not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by the doctor. The patient should follow the directions on the prescription label. Aciphex (rabeprazole) is usually given for 4 to 8 weeks only. The doctor may recommend a second course of treatment if the patient needs additional healing time. When treating h. Pylori infection, rabeprazole may be needed for only 7 days. This medicine should be taken with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Rabeprazole may be taken with or without food. The patient should not crush, break, or chew the tablet. The pill should be swallowed as whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking or crushing the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. This medication should be taken for the entire length of time prescribed by the doctor. Symptoms may get better before the treatment is completed. Rabeprazole should be stored at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

The patient should not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with the doctor first. This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: atazanavir, nelfinavir. If the patient is currently using any of these medication, consultation should be done with the doctor or pharmacist before starting rabeprazole. Before using this medication, the doctor should be told about all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products the patient is using, especially of: warfarin. Some products need stomach acid so that the body can absorb them properly (such as ampicillin, iron supplements, calcium supplements, dasatinib, azole antifungals including ketoconazole). Rabeprazole decreases stomach acid, so it may change how well these other products work.
In case of over-dose the patient should contact the local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Before using this medication, the doctor or pharmacist should be told about the medical history of the patient, especially of: severe liver disease, other stomach problems (e.g., tumors).
