Avodart - Dutasteride

What is Avodart or Dutasteride?
Avodart (Dutasteride) is prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. Avodart (Dutasteride) helps reducing urinary blockage and improves urine flow and may also reduce the need for prostate surgery later on. Avodart (Dutasteride) prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Avodart (Dutasteride) can be used alone or in combination with the alpha blocker. Avodart (Dutasteride) is sometimes given with another combination medication called tamsulosin (Flomax).
Indications
Avodart (Dutasteride) is indicated for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. This medication can be used in combination with the alpha blocker or with combination medication called tamsulosin (Flomax). Avodart may also be used for other purposes not mentioned here.
Dosage
This medication should be exactly taken as it is prescribed. The patient should not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by the doctor. The directions on the prescription label should be followed properly. This medicine should be taken with a full glass of water. Avodart can be taken with or without food.
The medicine should not be chewed, crushed, or opened. It should be swallowed the whole. It may take up to 6 months of using this medicine before the symptoms improve. For best results, the patient should keep using the medication as directed and should not stop taking Avodart without talking to the doctor. To be sure this medication is improving the condition; prostate will need to be checked on a regular basis. PSA (prostate-specific antigen) may also be tested to help detect prostate cancer. It is important for the patient not to miss any scheduled visits to the doctor.
Side Effects
The various reported side effects of the medicine are:
- Allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- Less serious avodart side effects may include:
- Decreased libido (sex drive);
- Decreased amount of semen released during sex;
- Impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection); or
- Breast tenderness or enlargement.
Drug Interactions
The various drugs that can interact with Avodart (Dutasteride)
- Conivaptan (Vaprisol);
- Diclofenac (Arthrotec, Cataflam, Voltaren, Flector Patch, Solareze);
- Imatinib (Gleevec);
- Isoniazid (for treating tuberculosis);
- An antibiotic such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), clotrimazole (Mycelex Troche), dalfopristin/quinupristin (Synercid), erythromycin (E.E.S., eryped, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), telithromycin (Ketek), or voriconazole (Vfend);
- An antidepressant such as nefazodone;
- Heart or blood pressure medication such as diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac), nicardipine (Cardene), quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex, Quin-Release), or verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan); or
- HIV/AIDS medicine such as amprenavir (Agenerase), atazanavir (Reyataz), delavirdine (Rescriptor), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir(Viracept), saquinavir (Invirase, Fortovase), or ritonavir (Norvir).
Overdosage
The patient should seek emergency medical attention if too much of medicine is used. Though life-threatening symptoms are not expected with the overdose of Avodart.
Precautions
- Before taking Avodart, the doctor should be informed if have or ever had an allergic reaction to this medication, or to a similar medicine called finasteride (Propecia, Proscar).
- This medication should never be taken by a woman or a child. Avodart can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle the capsules.
- Avodart is not for use by women, this medication can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy. Woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant should not be handle avodart capsules. If a woman accidentally comes into contact with this medication from a leaking capsule, the area should be washed properly with soap and water right away.
