


Famvir (Famciclovir) is an antiviral drug. Famvir is used to treat infections that are caused by herpes viruses. Herpes viruses include genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chicken pox. Famvir (Famciclovir) slows the growth of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Famvir does not cure herpes, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infections, decrease pain, and lower the risk of complications from the virus.

Treatment should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (such as tingling, burning, blisters). Each dose should be consumed with a full glass of water. The patient should drink plenty of water while taking this medication to keep the kidneys working properly. Famvir can be taken with or without food. If the patient is taking Famvir with food it may decrease stomach upset. The patient should take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by the doctor. Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept as clean and dry as possible. The patient should wear loose clothes as it may help to prevent irritation of the lesions.
The various side effects of the medicine are: signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain; headache; diarrhea, dizziness, sleepiness; mild itching or skin rash; or confusion.
Before taking Famvir, the patient should tell the doctor if taking probenecid (Benemid). The patient should tell the doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications in use, this includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors.
The patient should seek emergency medical attention if the patient have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a Famvir overdose are unknown.
The doctor should be informed if the patient is suffering from:
