Lexapro® (escitalopram oxalate) is an orally administered selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is prescribed for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder. Lexapro or Escitalopram oxalate affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression or anxiety. However, it may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this drug information guide.
Lexapro (escitalopram) is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
The recommended starting dose of Lexapro is 10 mg once daily. If the dose is increased to 20 mg, this should occur after a minimum of one week. Your doctor may recommend Maintenance Treatment for certain conditions
The common side effects of Escitalopram oxalate or Lexapro are Nausea, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, weakness, tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, increased sweating, or yawning may occur. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor immediately.
Avoid other medicines used to treat impotence, such as alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin, others), without first speaking to your doctor. You should not take sildenafil (Viagra) alongwith a nitrate drug including nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, and others), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket). Nitrates are also found in some recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers").
Symptoms of overdose of escitalopram, alone or in combination with other drugs and/or alcohol, includes convulsions, coma, dizziness, hypotension, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, sinus tachycardia, somnolence, ECG changes (including QT prolongation and very rare cases of torsade de pointes). Acute renal failure has been very rarely reported accompanying overdose.
Lexapro is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to escitalopram or citalopram or any of the inactive ingredients in Lexapro.
