Sildenafil Citrate or Viagra is an oral drug for male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction (ED). It works by dilating blood vessels in the penis, allowing the inflow of blood needed for an erection. Sildenafil relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body. Sildenafil under the name Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. Viagra® (Sildenafil), is the citrate salt of sildenafil, a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5).
Sildenafil (Viagra) is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men and may also be used for other purposes not listed in this drug information guide.
The recommended dose is 50 mg for most patients, as required, approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. However, Sildenafil (Viagra) may be taken anywhere from 4 hours to 0.5 hour before sexual activity. Based on effectiveness and toleration, the dosage may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is, however, once per day.
When you use Sildenafil (Viagra) headache, flushing, stomach upset, heartburn, nosebleeds, diarrhea, dizziness, or lightheadedness may occur. Vision changes such as increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or trouble telling blue and green colors apart may also occur. A painful or prolonged erection, hearing problems or serious allergic reaction like rash, itching, unusual swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing may also occur. Seek medical attention or call your doctor, if any of these effects persist or worsen.
Avoid other medicines used to treat impotence, such as alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin, others), without first speaking to your doctor. You should not take sildenafil (Viagra) alongwith a nitrate drug including nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, and others), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket). Nitrates are also found in some recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers").
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and feeling light-headed or fainting. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of Sildenafil (Viagra).
You should not take sildenafil (Viagra) alongwith a nitrate drug
If you are using a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems, you should not take sildenafil (Viagra) including nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, and others), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket). Nitrates are also found in some recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers"). It is very importants to know that taking sildenafil with a nitrate medicine can cause a serious decrease in blood pressure, leading to fainting, stroke, or heart attack. If you experience dizziness or nauseated, or have pain, numbness, or tingling in your chest, arms, neck, or jaw, during sexual activity, then stop, and call your doctor immediately. Sildenafil (Viagra) can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye, causing sudden vision loss. Must stop using sildenafil and get emergency medical help if you have sudden vision loss.
